During crises like natural disasters or conflicts, sexual harassment increases vulnerability among displaced populations, especially impacting women, children, and LGBTQ+ individuals. It worsens trauma and mental health challenges. Reporting is difficult due to fear, distrust, and communication disruptions. Effective responses need coordinated efforts from humanitarian groups, local authorities, and communities to create safe spaces, promote gender equality, and ensure accountability through clear legal frameworks.
During the monsoon season, floods and landslides frequently occur across the country, forcing affected people to seek safer spaces for survival. However, this search for safety brings a high risk of sexual assault by both known and unknown individuals. Unfortunately, such incidents have occurred in the past, leaving many as victims of sexual harassment.
In this episode of Gulai Sambad, we address the risk of sexual harassment during crises and explore ways to mitigate these incidents. Our discussion includes interviewing Nirajan Khadka, SRHR-Technical Advisor at Plan International Nepal. Khadka highlights the risks of sexual harassment in crises and suggests possible measures to reduce these cases.
