Teenage abortion and unsafe abortion practices in Nepal have severe consequences on physical, mental, social, and public health. Physically, unsafe abortions can lead to hemorrhage, infections, organ damage, and even death, while teenagers face higher risks of complications due to physical immaturity. Mentally, the psychological impact includes depression, anxiety, PTSD, and stigma-induced isolation. Socially, affected teenagers often face family and community rejection, disrupted education, and economic burdens from medical costs and loss of productivity. Legally, there are risks of criminal charges and exploitation in areas with restricted abortion laws. Public health consequences include increased maternal mortality and morbidity and a significant strain on the healthcare system. Mitigating these effects requires comprehensive sex education, improved access to reproductive health services, psychological support, and community programs to reduce stigma and support affected young women.
In this episode of Gulabi Sambad, we explore the issue of teenage abortion, unsafe abortion, and the consequences of frequently using contraceptive pills with Dr. Shree Prasad Adhikari, a Senior Gynecologist and Obstetrician, and Director at the Paropakar Maternity and Women’s Hospital, Thapathali.
