Current Nepali cinemas address sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) by focusing on awareness, education, and empowerment. Filmmakers are challenging societal taboos, advocating for informed decision-making on family planning and gender equality. They critique issues like child marriage and gender-based violence, calling for systemic reforms. Yet, censorship, conservative attitudes, traditional practices of making films, and ways of addressing social issues limit exploring these themes. Collaborations between filmmakers and SRHR organizations are vital for advancing SRHR in Nepal.
In this episode of the podcast Gulabi Sambad, we have discussed the same issue with Film Critic, Prabhakar Gautam. Gautam has shared his thoughts, insights, and observations on how Nepali Cinema has portrayed issues of SRHR and how they have to present such problems in the future.
